Q. Is the SIMS offshore training DP Centre (henceforth SIMS DP Centre) accredited for conduct of DP Courses, and if so by whom?
A. SIMS DP Centre is fully accredited by The Nautical Institute, UK for the conduct of DP courses. The Nautical Institute’s guidelines for the training and certification of Dynamic Positioning Officers is the industry standard. You may download the list of accredited DP Centers from the Nautical Institute website.
Q. Does SIMS DP Centre issue Dynamic Positioning Operator’s Certificates?
A. Only the Nautical Institute, UK issues the Dynamic Positioning Operator’s Certificate and only the Nautical Institute accredited DP institutes conduct DP Courses.
Q. What are the different types of Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificates?
A. There are three types of DP Operator Certificates – Unclassed, Limited and Unlimited. An Unclassed Certificate permits you to work on an Unclassed DP vessel, the Limited DP Certificate allows you to work on a DP Class I vessel only, while the Unlimited DP Certificate allows you to work on any Class of DP vessel.
Q. What is the procedure for obtaining a Dynamic Positioning Operator’s Certificate?
A. You will have to complete the Basic DP Course followed by a 60 day DP familiarization on a DP vessel. During this DP familiarization period, you will have to complete Logbook tasks. You are eligible to do the DP Advanced Course after this familiarization period.
After the DP Advanced Course, you have to do another 60 days DP time. You will have to apply to Nautical Institute on the NI Alexis platform -http://www.nialexisplatform.org/
You have to send the original documents to them for verification and issue of the DP Certificate.
Q. How do I upgrade my Limited Dynamic Positioning Operator’s Certificate?
A. Once you have obtained the Limited DP Certificate, you will have to complete 60 DP days on a DP Class II or Class III vessel to be eligible for the upgrade. You will once again have to apply to Nautical Institute and send the originals to them for issue of the Unlimited DP Certificate.
Q. How much time do I get to complete the DP Operator’s Scheme for obtaining the DP Certificate?
A. The entire DP Scheme towards obtaining at least one of the DP Certificates is 4 years from commencing the scheme, i.e., from the date of completion of the Basic DP Course. If you have completed 4 years since that date and if you have not been able to complete one or more elements, then that element will have to be repeated prior to applying for the DP Certificate.
Q. How long is my Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificate valid for?
A. Your certificate will remain valid as long as you operate DP systems regularly. This is defined as a minimum of twelve months DP watch keeping experience within the previous five years or if you work as a DP instructor at an Institute accredited training centre. If you have not sailed on a DP vessel or instructed on DP, you will have to undergo a DP Refresher Course.
Q. Is DP time served on DP vessels prior to doing the DP Basic Course counted?
A. No, DP time gained prior to attending the Basic (Induction) Course is not counted in order to apply for a DP certificate.
Q. I do not have an OOW Certificate. Can I still train to become a Dynamic Positioning Officer?
A. The Minimum qualification is set as per STCW Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck, Regulation III/1 – III /2 – III/3 Engine, and Regulation III/6 ETO.
Alternative Deck qualifications are considered by Nautical Institute on a case-by-case basis.
Prospective DPO’s, who are in the process of training for an STCW certificate can start the DP scheme and complete the DP Basic Course and 30 days of the 60 days DP familiarization, but cannot do the remaining 30 days or the DP Advanced (Simulator) course till they hold an appropriate STCW certificate.
Q. How is the Revalidation of DP Certificates done?
A. From 1st January 2015, DP certificates are required to be revalidated every 5 years.
