Deck Officer Training



Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a one (1)-year course conducted at SIMS, Lonavala. Upon Successful completion, a cadet qualifies to join as a deck cadet on board ships. During the 18 months of sea time training required onboard a sea-going vessel, a cadet receives free boarding & lodging apart from a stipend. Subsequently, he needs to obtain the Second Mate’s Certificate of Competency under the Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India to qualify as a third officer on any sea going vessel. A cadet will also be eligible for the B.Sc (Applied Nautical Science) degree from IMU (Indian Maritime University) after obtaining the Second Mate’s Certificate of Competency.

Results should be obtained at FIRST ATTEMPT from Regular Boards only (Class XII):

  • Minimum Aggregate - 60%
  • Minimum PCM aggregate - 60%
  • Minimum score in Physics & Maths individually - 50%

Minimum aggregate for Physics & Maths - 60%

(For Andhra Pradesh & Kerala State Board, separate board exams held for each class(11th & 12th) & hence, aggregate of both marks are considered)
BSc: Degree in Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Electronics with minimum 55% in final year & 60% marks over all along with Min 55% in PCM in Class XII

  • BE/B Tech: Degree from an AICTE with min 50% in final year

Class 12th Improvement / Re- attempt

Candidate should have appeared for all subjects in the improvement tests from the same board of the previous attempt (Physics, Chemistry, Maths)

Language

English shall be one of the subjects with minimum marks scored 50% in class X or XII

Medical

Physically fit and meet the standards laid out by DG Shipping & ESM / SIMS*

Eyesight

No Colour Blindness, 6/6 vision in better eye and maximum permissible up to 6/9 in the other eye (without visual aids)

Boys: 157 cm minimum, Girls: 152 cm minimum

Weight

Boys: 48 kg minimum; Girls: 45 kg minimum

BMI

Should be between 19 and 27

IMU CET

Candidates must clear latest IMU CET.

Passport

Candidate must be in possession of a valid passport prior to joining the course
* A strict medical fitness test is necessary for all selected candidates prior to admission. Candidates are required to undergo a medical test as prescribed by a DG Shipping approved doctor who is also approved by SIMS.
